My worst enemy... SCOLIOSIS

Have you ever had a sore bum from riding a horse? Or a sore foot from playing a game of capture the flag with bare feet? Maybe a sore leg from your brother-in-law pinching your leg fat with his toes? Well imagine if those things were sore ALL THE TIME!! It would suck. Actually it does suck. I have scoliosis so my back hurts non stop. It has been especially bad the last day or so. I was just sitting in church and all of a sudden my back just started spasming. It was really annoying. I mean, my back really does always always hurt but it was just exceptionally bad this time. I have been in so much pain yesterday and it reminds me of how much I really do hate my scoliosis.

Some of you might be asking yourself what scoliosis is. Actually you probably aren't because chances are your daughter, your wife or you, yourself, has scoliosis, since mom, Joe and Nat are the only people that read this blog. But for any outsiders, here is a brief, but not so brief, description of the worst thing in the world, my biggest enemy..........SCOLIOSIS!!

Scoliosis is the "abnormal lateral curvature of the spine." In other words.... my back is messed up. If I bend over and you
feel my back, it is in the shape of an 'S'. Not only that but my entire body is messed up because of this. My shoulders are crooked, my rib cage is turned, my hips aren't aligned and my back muscles are uneven.

So when did my history with scoliosis start? Well I cursed it upon myself. You see, my mom has scoliosis and so
does my older sister, Natalie, and I found this out about both of them before I knew that I had it as well. So one day I was in the car with my mom and I told her, " I hope I have scoliosis because it gets Natalie out of cleaning all the time and I want an excuse not to clean." My mom looked at me weird and said, "Natalie handles her scoliosis very well and hardly complains for how much it hurts." I just didn't think that was true at all and hoped and hoped that I would grow up to have scoliosis. I soon after found out that I indeed had it and soon came to realize that it wasn't going to be as cool as I had always thought.

I had to wear this stupid back brace for two years in middle school that made me look absolutely ridiculous. It was this big acrylic thing that pushed up really far under my left armpit and had a giant hole on my left hip so whenever I gained weight, I would only gain it there. Kids at school would always say "knock on wood" and then knock on my back brace. It wasn't even wood. I hope all their problems they were knocking off on me came and bit them in the butt. Wearing that brace was one of the worst experiences of my life. Especially in the summer. When I would take it off, my under shirt would be soaked in my sweat and I could hardly do anything in it so summer was boring as shell. I am so mad that I wished this upon myself and I would never wish it upon anyone else.

I should have surgery but I just haven't gotten around to that. Last I heard my upper back was at a 40 degree angle and my lower was at a 35 degree angle. I'm sure it's worse now because that was like 3 years ago and I've shrunk an inch in the last year. Who knows how tall I should be? Eww, I probably am supposed to have a really long torso.

Well that about sums it up. Scoliosis makes me want a bullet in my back. I hope that my kids do not inherit this unfortunate physical flaw of mine. So next time you have a sore muscle or a head ache or an upset stomach, just think to yourself, "man, I should be grateful I don't have scoliosis."

(I couldn't get the pictures up that I wanted but they will be coming soon.)

After having my son it just seem that it got worse. It is measuring now at 34 degrees, and I am scared like you that with time it gets worse. :(

Is there any email I can email you at to talk about this? I need to talk to people about my scoli. I feel lonely.

My email is susanayass@yahoo.com

Thanks,
Susana

I was Diagnosised at seven and my spin was at a 82 degree angle by ten. That febuary i had surgery. It went bad and i ended up having two more. I feel like i'm a screw up alot of the time like this is all my fault. I have no cordination and i'm more than accedint prone i think they come looking for me. When my ribs started to turn at first i didn't think anything of it and now that its putting pressure on my organs. i've been told that it will stop soon but it hasn't. I'm glad to have found some one else who has had the thing with the ribs. :D my e-mail is asmiller82490@gmail.com if you ever want to talk.

Hey,
I just found your blog, and I'm really sorry you've had such a hard time with your scoliosis. I just wanted to share my blog with you. I had a spinal fusion last year (my senior year of high school). Scoliosis is definitely a hard thing to go through, and the only reason why I could was because of God's strength and help. I hope that your back is doing better and you're not in as much pain. http://scoliosis-braceyourself.blogspot.com/

Hi, my name is Christine and I've got scoliosis too. I was diagnosed around when I was 11 or 12. When I first found out about it the curve was in the teens or low 20's. We were to schedule an appointment with some guy to talk about what to do about it. Well, we were about 5 months late in doing so because of another medical issue I was going through. Well when we finally met with the man about a year and a half after I was first diagnosed, my upper curve was about 42, and my lower curve was in the low 30's. It had progressed so much over that year. My jaw dropped when I saw my xray. It looked like a backwards dasani S. He recommended surgery but I was only 13 so that was too scary to think about. We ended up doing an intensive chiropractic treatment 4 times a week for 6-9 months but my chiropractor said he doesn't think my spine will ever be strait. And it twists too so my rip sticks out and it's so embarrassing. Well anyways I'm still doing chiropractor now, just about rounding out month 6. A lot of the times I wish we just went with surgery because than you get it over with and have a strait spine. And maybe I wouldn't have to deal with this pain. I would actually be 2 inches taller =/. Well the curves in my back have gone down to 20 something and the lower one is in the teens. But it still hurts so bad. I can't stand for long, and sitting for long hurts too. I just started school again, today was my first day. It was only a half day and just from that my back hurts so bad right now. I was googling scoliosis surgery..and stumbled upon your blog. Well, I know this post was written years ago, but if anyone wants to talk just keep commenting, I'll be checking back. It's nice to know people understand what I'm going through..kinda. Sorry this was so long. I just needed to talk to someone about it.

I have a 44 curve top and bottom, and I am currently 12 and in a brace. You're lucky you only have a 35. I dance, and if I get surgery, I have to quit dance and saxophone due to lung capacity problems and BLAH BLAH BLAH.

Hey Melanie,

I am 19 and was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 11. Only me and my cousin actually have this in our family.

When I go to my doctor and tell them I am in pain they always say all their scoliosis patients never have pain. I thought i was weird because sitting, laying down, walking, and even going to the bathroom became painful. I was suffering everyday. Even the simple task as sweeping i have trouble doing. I am still wearing my back brace occasionally.I try not to let it affect my life but its hard. Hang in there love ^^

I was diagnosed with scoliosis not even a year ago. Before I was diagnosed my back hurt so bad that I had to miss cheer leading practices, but the worst part of it is that my mom never believed me.She would always just say it cant be that bad and stuff like that. I was only 11. At my next physical, I told my doctor about this constant back pain. She had me bend over at the waist while she check it out. She kept saying uh hmm, oh yes, and I was freaking out. When I got back up she said you have scoliosis and then went out to tell my mom. My mom cried. She kept saying I'm so sorry I never believed you, Why did't I believe her and stuff like that.
The next day I went to a specialist and had my first ex rays
and it was a 45 degree curve. He said that since I wasn't anywhere near fully grown he would put me in a brace. So in two day I go pick up the brace.

hi i am Chin! just bumped into your blog as i was searching scoliosis. i was 10 when i began wearing my brace. My scoliosis later discovered when my t1 vertebra collapsed. it hit my nerve in the spine causes my feet to numb that i hadn't able to walk for 3 weeks. Thanks God! I can run now! but it resulted to dextro scoliosis, I am 23 now, and haven't checked with my doctor after i stopped wearing my braces when i was 13. sometimes my spine hurts when exposed to long time sitting.
